Interview: Introducing Multi-talented rapper from Diani

Exclusive Interview with one of the talented rappers Rapkeed.

Every single day that passes-by, fresh new talent rises in the entertainment industry of Kenya and the latest one that has caught our attention is Mohamed Athuman better known as RapKeed is a Kenyan rapper and songwriter from Diani, Ukunda. He officially started recording in mid-2014 and was featured by Dice Gang on a track titled ‘Only One’ the first song he ever recorded. Afterward, he started doing solo projects. He did a freestyle (95-sec timebomb freestyle).

He is known for his storytelling, imagery, wordplay, passion and varied song structures, RapKeed brings hard-hitting lyricism with narratives to Diani, not traditionally known for its lyricists.

Speaking to Hotline Clique in an exclusive interview, Rap Keed took us through his personal and musical life in order for us to know his story and how he does his thing.

Question: Kindly introduce yourself, who is Rapkeed?
Answer: Real name Is Mohamed Athuman, from South coast Diani, Kenya. I am a hip hop artist.

Question: How did you come up with your stage name?
Answer: Well Not all of us get to choose our stage names,, when I started rapping my friends used to call me that, I liked it, and here we are.

Question: Give us a background of your music career journey?
Answer: As Rapkeed I started recording in mid-2014. I was featured by Dice Gang254 on a track titled “Only One”, that was the first song I ever recorded. Afterward, I started doing solo projects. I joined Dice Gang and it has been a journey with the crew. Just to make things clear, I work both with the crew and solo projects like “Slow Down”, “Never Lose” and many more that are yet to be released. Known for my storytelling, imagery, wordplay, passion and varied song structures, Rapkeed brings hard-hitting lyricism with narratives to Diani, not traditionally known for its lyricists.

Question. Describe your sound?
Answer: Urban, Cool, hard & inspirational. My sound is something you can easily relate to.

Question: What was the inspiration behind Rapkeed?
Answer: Everything I do concerning music is inspirational. Where I come from its very few people do what I do, I represent the streets, I speak my mind and its all about chasing the goals whatever the case.

Question: How do you market yourself?
Answer: I don’t. I have a team that does that. Celebvibestar.

Question: The industry is full of cut-throat competition. What is unique about you that sets you apart from the rest?
Answer: As I said earlier, my sound. I speak my mind. And whatever I say in my music is relatable.

Question: What challenges have you encountered as an artist in the music industry? How have you been able to overcome those challenges?
Answer: The struggle is real man, and the competition is insane! Getting airplay was a dream leave alone getting shows you were willing to do for free. These challenges don’t end man, but that’s the beauty of it.

Personally I haven’t overcome all the challenges, but I’ll say this; Put God first, stay humble, discipline is everything and make the right networks. There is beauty in the struggle.

Question: In your opinion who is the most influential and successful artiste in your genre today and why?
Answer: I grew up listening to Lil Wayne, why? He always speaks his mind.

Question: Do you make your own beats and write your own lyrics? If you don’t do any of this by yourself how do you get this done?
Answer: I write my own lyrics, but I do work with different producers, the likes of Producer Baindo of Bigfoot Productions and GTC Beats from Hood Music Kibera.

Question: If you could choose to work with some of today’s established artists or producers to move your game to the top, with whom would you work with?
Answer: Artist in Kenya, its gonna be Khaligraph, I have always wanted to work with Motiff.

Question: Which latest songs, videos, or mixtape releases are currently available to your fans and where can they be heard or downloaded?
Answer: I have an E.P that is yet to Drop. I’ll give more info about that when it’s all set to drop. My music is available in all online music stores; iTunes, Deezer, Spotify, tidal, Soundcloud, etc..

Question: Are you under a record label or an independent artist?
Answer: I am under a record label.

Question: Is going platinum or winning a Grammy important to you, and if you were forced to make only one choice, which of the two would you choose and why?
Answer: I want everything. I want to go platinum and win the Grammys. These things are very important to a brand.

Question: Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
Answer: Running my own record label, signing upcoming artists and help them achieve their goals.

Question: What in your opinion is the biggest barrier an artist like yourself, has to face and overcome to gain any commercial success?
Answer: I haven’t gained that commercial success yet, so it’s not in my place to answer that, but tell you what, ask me this very same question after 5 years.

Question: Any advice to aspiring young artists?
Answer: Every fan counts, Get to know your fans and what they expect from you, Believe in yourself, every single music you put out matters, make the right friends (music is all about networks, so every contact you have is important.), be humble.

Question: In closing, tell us something about any projects and ideas you have in store or are already working on?
Answer: I have a project with Hassano Afrocentric that is yet to drop, also There is an EP coming through, you make sure you follow me on my social media for any updates about it;
